Overview

The department of Mathematics was started during the year 1949 with a view to impart quality science education to the poor, rural and urban students.Since its inception, the department has been striving to impart the quality education in Mathematics at UG level to the aspirants of this area.

In the year 1967-68 Mathematics was introduced as one of the major subjects in the science wing.

The department has research oriented well experienced faculty. Our faculty are attending periodically seminars, workshops and conducting guest lectures by eminent scholars in the field as part of curriculum.

Now department has created platform for academicians to discuss on the trust areas of Mathematics.

The present semester system was introduced at degree level by the Karnatak University, Dharwad during the year 2005-2006. Mathematics is studied as one of the 3 optional subjects in various combinations like PCM,PME,PMS and PMCS . For I to IV semester Mathematics has two papers of 75 marks each. 75 marks are divided as 60 marks for semester exam and 15 marks for Internal Assessment (IA) . For V and VI semesters, Mathematics has 3 papers of 100 marks each. 100 marks are divided as 80 marks for semester exam and 20 for IA.

“ Linear Algebra , Rings , Integral Domain and Fields” have been added in the revised syllabus(2014-15) in the semester system. Each semester is of 8 weeks duration. During each semester for each paper two tests are conducted for the IA. In addition assignment is to be given for each paper.

Our vision is to be a model school of Mathematics and try to be part research at the national and international level .

Mission

Our mission is to prepare young Mathematicians with commitment to thier profession and loyally towards the organization they work for and train them to play the role Mathematics of international repute to fulfil the need of the next generation Science, & Mathematics .

Induction Programme

On the day first of every academic year , the Department practices the “Induction Programme” for the students of 1st semester . During this programme students are given information regarding the Department and college atmosphere and are motivated for their further education.

The Department of Mathematic offers courses leading to BSc degree. The BSc degree course is spread over 6 semesters . The course structure is as follows

Services to other departments

The faculties of the Department have been teaching Mathematics for the newly introduced courses like BCA and BSc. Computer Science. The faculties of the Department also guide the students of final degree BA, BSc , BCom for entrance examination , PGCET required for the admission of the courses like MBA , MCA of VTU .

Wall Magazine

Every year the Department publishes two wall magazines. Called “ JSS MATHEMATICA” . The articles published are collected from the students and faculties of the department .

Achievements

Zameer Bijapur obtained 9th rank (B.Com)to the Karnatak University in the year 2015.
Chaitra. M. Kumbargoudar awarded III prize in the essay competition at Baba Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.
Archana Bhat selected for MTTS programme funded by NBHM in the year 2014-15. And obtained 5th rank to the Karnatak University in B.Sc.in 2015.
Kumari Megha Vibhuti awarded Gold Medal in Karate held in Shrilanka during the year 2014-15.
Students of our department have participated in inter- university drama
Competition held at Bellary and got first place.
Sandeep. Ganagi of B.Sc II Sem has a credit of University blue in Throw Ball during 2014-15.
Shivanand Hosamani obtained 232 all india level ranking in IIT- JAM exam 2016-17.
