The Department of Statistics has been established in the year 1985. However, the teaching of subject Statistics is introduced by the parent Department of Mathematics in the year 1971 for the B.Sc. Degree course. The growing needs of the stake holders, made the college to introduce the new subject in the year 1978 like Applied Statistics for the B.A. Course, and Business Statistics for the B.Com. Courses. The department is working up to the reputations of the college and expectations of the stake holders, their parents, and research institutions and universities since then till date.
The College offers B.Sc. Course with PMS Group (Physics, Mathematics and Statistics), and B.Sc. Course with MSCS Group (Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science). At present only PMS Combinations are provided for the students with increased strength of 40 students. The Applied Statistics Course is meant for B.A. students. However the course of Business Statistics is offered to Third and Fourth SemesterCourses of B.Com stream for all those students who have not studied the subject Statistics at their PUC/ 12thStandard.
The department used to run Statistics Course for Degree as well as for PUC Courses (Science Stream: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics (PCMS) and Commerce Stream: Accountancy, Business Studies, Commerce and Statistics (ABSCS). After the separation of Degree Courses from PUC Courses as per UGC guidelines, only degree course is continued since June 2000. The faculties of parent Mathematics Department used to engage PUC Statistics Course up to 1980 and after wards it was handled only by Statistics staff of the Department.
