Facilities

At present Department is equipped with Statistics laboratory. It has more than 40 Calculators (Desk Top and Scientific) (Electrical/Battery operated) which is provided to students during their practical classes. However students are advised to work on their own scientific calculators. This is because calculator models/makes of company differ. The practice with their own calculator helps in acquaintance of operations of buttons and statistical calculations at ease during their practical examinations. The department has 10 computers, which are utilized for Statistical Data Analysis using MS Excel Package and other software’s installed in them. Laser and Dot Printers are utilized for printing of Theory/Practical Question Papers etc,.The Department also possesses a Digital Smart Board which is utilized for presentation of classes/PPT and other downloaded/prepared class notes and lectures. The computers and printers are also used for project work of students.

The department also possesses the Departmental Library and more than 50 reference/study books are available for ready reference. These are issued to students on a circular basis for a fortnight for study on demand. The same is utilized for reference work by teaching faculty during the working hours of the college.

The department also takes interest in conducting ‘National Statistics Day’ celebration, on 29th June every year. The department has arranged this function in college in collaboration with NSSO(FOD) Hubli, Government of India and also separately during various years to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Late Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis, a renowned Statistician and a contributor to the field of economic growth of the country. On this occasion essay/quiz competitions are conducted to students of PUC/Degree level and prizes will be distributed to student winners in the competitions in various segments.

The department also arranges study tour to students to Industries / Agricultural University in local areas to acquaint them with theory that they have learnt in classes and their practical applications in day to day life.

Future Plans

The department is interested in introducing a free statistical package R-software for the benefits of the students of Statistics Course. It is the need of hour for any individual working in Information Technology sector to have knowledge of R-software for advanced data analysis. The batch of students entering the course are to be introduced with this package so as to solve their statistical problems meant in a curriculum for practicals to be solved using R-software. This gives confidence and a privilege over other students to face interviews in IT sector with sound background learnt at degree course.

The department is proud to be a part of producing competent graduates and good human beings who are always in demand at business organizations in particular and society in general and serve for the welfare of the humanity. This can be achieved only by getting feed-back of students and stake holders from time to time.

Research, Consultancy, Extension and Community Services:

The department has a cordial relationship with almost all Research Personnel & Institutions in and around city of Dharwad. A free consultancy is extended to all those who approach the department. The Consultancy is provided in analysing the data. The help is also extended to understand the Statistical Software / Statistical Tools / Methods required for their project / Research Work. The most visited faculties are from Department of Geography, Botany, Zoology, Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Psychology, Medical and Dental Sciences.

The faculty members also have a share of guiding the KSOU, IGNOU and MBA students for their Project Work who have registered their names under our institutions present in the premises.

The Students of BBA come with project work. The Psychology department students, Medical and Dental College students of the city regularly approach teaching faculties of the department for seeking help in their project related data analysis part work. The faculties of the department quite eagerly help these students fraternity in giving proper guidance in theory as well as analysis part.

The department is now thought of extending its activities to schools in the campus. The CBSE and State Syllabus involve Statistics Part in their Mathematics Curriculum in various classes of higher secondary education. It is handled by Mathematics staffs of the school. They lack the doctrine knowledge of Statistics in respect of its concepts and inferences. They teach it as a part of Mathematical Computations, and main gist of Statistics to be imparted to the levels of students is lost. Our faculties are interested in introducing the basic idea of just mathematical computations is not sufficient but one has to derive the meaning and importance present in the data. The effort is to be made to convince the students the importance of statistics in day to day life.

The department has extended its hands to its advanced learners, who have shown interest in conduct of sample surveys and its analysis. The faculties also help in data analysis.

The Post Graduate students of the Karnatak University, Dharwad approach the faculties of the department in deciding and choosing topic for their Project Work which is included in their curriculum of work. The faculties extend their helping hand in all their project related support work.
