DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

Overview

The department of Biotechnology was established in 2003 as one of optional subjects for the Bachelor of Science programme, affiliated to Karnatak University ,Dharwad. Biotechnology  is a technology that involves the use of living organisms. It has applications in four major industrial areas, including health care (medical), crop production and agriculture, non-food (industrial) uses of crops and other products (e.g. biodegradable plastics, vegetable oil, biofuels), and environmental uses. Biotechnology utilizes living cells and cellular materials to create pharmaceutical, diagnostic, agricultural, environmental, and other products to benefit society. It is also used to study and to alter genetic information in animals so that human diseases can be modeled and studied.
