Overview

The department of Kannada which started in the year 1944 along with the college has got a glorious history of its own.

With the graceful blessings of Hon’ble President Shri Vishweshatirtha Shripandagal and under the spirited guidance of Karnataka Ratna Padmabushana Shri Shri Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, Dharmasthala, as the secretary of this institution lead us towards the success and glory of this esteemed institution. At the same time, the contribution of Prof. N. Vajrakumar, who worked as the principal for more than two decades, is not less than the above mentioned. Dr. Ajit Prasad.

The credit of working as the first H. O. D. of our department goes toLate Shri. R. Y. Dharwadkar, who was also one among the most capable principles ever found in the history of J.S.S college. His contribution as a great literary figure, as a notable speaker is worth mentioning. The other H.O.D’s from the Department of Kannada received a lot from him. Patronage are-Prof.G.D. Nadakarani. Late Prof. R. M. Kavishwar and Dr .S .S. Gali and Dr. B. B. Shigihalli.

Today, the Departments as many people dedicated their valuable service to the same. In the total syllabus we are teaching “Halagannada” “Nadugannada”, “Hosagannada” and “Adhunik Kannada”-Kavya, Kathe, Prabhandha, Kadambari, Pracheena Shasangalu, Meemamnse,Vimarshe, Bhasha, Adhayana. Vyakarana, Folk literature, For B.Com-2nd semester specially introduced “Vyavaharika Kannada” called Business Kannada. Studey of media revolutions in Journalism and Radio and TV Presentation, Computers etc. working with our departments. We are counseling IGNOU and KSOU, KUD, BOS publishing the text books for students who appear for comnpetative exams like IAS and KAS and for P G, B.Ed courses we are always guiding them. That’s why some stundents are doing their PG from various Universities across the State. The Department also engaged research and publication activities. Publications include project works, special lectures, namely Siri Kannada, the latter especially meant for student-writers.

At present four well qualified and experienced faculty members are working in the Department. Out of four faculty members two are Doctorates.One is the member of the Kannada Sahitya Academy for two years. Almost every faculty member presented & published papers at several reputed National, International, State Level conferences and journals.

Objectives

The Department aims to achieve the following objectives; to achieve development of individual personality and social development by creation and studying Kannada literature; to highlight the study of importance of Kannada language ; to acquaint the students the knowledge of ancient and modern Kannada literature; to study the contributions of Kannada poets, scholars and Kannada literature; to develop the environment of Spoken Kannada language. The purpose of learning the Kannada language is to make the younger generation to understand the Kannadian cultural and social life and tradition.

Facilities

The Department is well equipped with the necessary educational aids. And also few computers are there in the department for the academic research, teaching and training. The department has also LCD projector, printer, scanner, and internet facilities for the use of teachers and students. The Department has strived to make the students proficient in soft skills along with the core curriculum so that the students have good placement opportunities.

Staff-student interaction takes place in the form of individual meeting, conferences and group discussions. Here the expert faculty guide and supervise the students in organizing the academic activities.. Various methodology courses, workshops and skills training programmes’ are also conducted to cater to the job demands of the market.

A unique library endowed with books useful for teachers, researchers and students is also a pride possession of the department. Department Library is growing to become one of the leading libraries in the JSS institution with a rich collection of books, journals, project reports, encyclopedias, dictionaries, rare materials and archives, with a total collection of more than 2500 items in its system. The Department library has also a collection of some valuable reference books collected by former heads and other teachers of the department. Students are permitted to make use of the library and work/refer during working hours.

Teaching jobs in Pre-University, Degree College and universities.Civil services & competitive examinations, Department of Kannada and culture.Research Institutes, Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Journalism field and Anchoring job, Research jobs and other socio-cultural fields.

Research Activities

The Department has organized a number of seminars and conferences as well as special lectures by eminent scholars/experts/resource persons from different parts of the state. It helps to improve the skill and academic knowledge of the students. In this way faculty members support the students and help simultaneously to get employment opportunities. The faculty members of the department are actively involved in guiding students leading to project work.

Extra-Curricular & Extension Activities

Faculty members and students of the department have been actively involved in extension activities in the neighborhood for holistic development of the society. Department Students are engaged in the extension activity which comes under the curriculum. Apart from them, National Service Scheme and National Cadet Corp also serve the society through One-day and Special Camp. In addition, outreach programs and invited lectures are also given to the community.

Invited Talks

Department of Kannada and Karnataka Sangha, JSS College Dharwad jointly organised a State level Concert on 29th September 2016. The renowed writer and poet, Dharwad Dr.Mohan Nagammanavr graced the occasion as chief guest.
Department of Kannada JSS College Dharwad jointly organised a Inter Collegiate Level Bhendre Geetra Gayana Competition on 31st January 2017 on the occasion of Dr D. R. Bhendre Jayanti. Shri Ananth Deshpande, Aakashavani and Doradarshana Artist graced the occasion as chief guest.
Department of Kannada,JSS College Dharwad organised a workshop on Personality Development on March 2017. A resource person Dr Shivanand Koujalagi, Retd Professor has deliverd a lecture on moral values.
Department of Kannada,Karnataka Sangha JSS College Dharwad and Basaveshvara Peetha, Karnatak University jointly organised one day programme on Vachanakararu and Vektitva Vikasana on 9th February, 2019. Dr Sharanamma Gorebal, Principal, Vidyaranya P.U.College, Dharwad and Dr.C.S.Kundagol, Co-ordinator, Basaveshvara Peetha,KUD have been participated as resource persons.
Department of Kannada,JSS College Dharwad organised an inaugural function of Karnataka Sangha on 31st August 2019 . Shri Basavaraj Kendholi, Retd. Principal and Folklore Artist graced the occasion as chief guest and deliverd a speech on Janapad Jagattu Jeevana.
Department of Kannada,JSS College Dharwad and Swapna Book House,Bangalore jointly organised one day, a book entiteled ‘Benki Bearu Be lalu; Anusandana’ release and review function on 25th August 2019. The eminent and renowed resource persons Dr Hampa Nagarajayya, Dr.Vajrakumar, Dr . Kamala Hampana,Dr.Padmaraj Dandavati,Dr.Mogalli Ganesh, Dr.Prashanta Nayak, Shri Nitish Sha and others have participated and criticized the book. All teachers and students of the Kannada department have actively participated.
Department of Kannada,JSS College Dharwad and Karnataka Sahitya Academy Bangalore jointly organised one day function namely ‘ Kattuvevu Navu Hosa Nadondanu’ on the occasion of Centenary of birth of M Gopala Krishna Adiga on the topic ‘Adigara Sahitya Saumskruti Chintane during the academic year 2019-20. The renowed poets and resource persons Dr. Siddaling Pattanashetti, Shri M. Nanjundayya, Dr.Venkatagiri Dalavai, Dr.G. Nayak, Dr.Tarini Shubhadayani, DrY.M.Bhajantri, Dr. Shashidhar Narendra and Dr. B.V. Vasantakumar has participated and spoke about Adigara Sahitya Saumskruti. All teachers and students of the Kannada department have actively particippated.
Department of Kannada JSS College Dharwad organised a special lecture on Yayati .Prof. B.G. Bidari Principal ,Good News College Kalaghatagi deliverd a lecture on Yayati Drama.
Department of Kannada J.S.S College Dharwad organised a special lecture on Beralge Koral.Dr.Shashidhar Narendra Seniour Announcer deliverd a lecture on Beralge Koral.
Department of Kannada J.S.S College Dharwad organised a special lecture on Relevance of Folk Literature. Dr. Ramu Moolagi, Janapad Artist deliverd a lecture on the topic.
Department of Kannada J.S.S College Dharwad and KIMS, Hubballi jointly organised a Workshop on Braille Lipi for blind students. Dr. Dr. Hiremath deliverd a lecture on the topic.

Future Plans

To improve the morality, soft skills and communication skills of students .
To conduct youth awareness programmes’ about nationality, cultural, language development and social morals among the society.
To encourage the student and staff members for paper presentation at various National/International conferences, workshops and seminars
To conduct national & international seminars for every year
Global recession may hamper placement opportunities for students. To come out from this challenge the desired subject objectives and outcomes are to be achieved satisfactorily.
To frame and design an effective Curriculum, Teaching learning methodologies that bridges the gap between learning and life leading.
To develop online teaching & learning methodologies.
To increase number of books and journals in the department library.
