Overview

Chemistry puts you at the heart of science, providing the fundamental knowledge and tools needed to address many of society needs and explore the unknown. Chemistry graduates are in demand by some of the most successful industries in India.

“Chemistry plays an integral role in today’s scientific endeavors. In this new and inspiring era, chemistry has gained enormous heights, glorified with immense contribution in medicine, biology, engineering, Pharmaceuticals, material sciences etc., Modern chemical research is a creative activity involving techniques across this wide range of science to actively design and synthesize molecules and materials, and determine their properties”.

With this great vision, the Department was established in the year 1949. The department of Chemistry is one of the vibrant Science Department of Janata Shikshana Samiti’s Banashankari Arts, Commerce & S.K.Gubbi Science College, Vidyagiri Dharwad. The Department was started with three staff members namely Dr. V. G. Kulkarni (Former Principal), Dr. V. D. Patil and Prof. J. A. Ashtaputre who were the pioneers of the department and established the department with their dedicated and sincere effort. Prof. J. A. Ashtaputre was the first head of the Department. He was an experienced & dedicated teacher and served the dept. for eight years (1949-1957).

1949 to 1992 the department offered chemistry as a major and minor subject. From 1992 onwards the department offers chemistry as one of the three optional subjects as per the Karnataka University policy.

The Department of chemistry has been recognized for its potential research output. Out of 11 staff members 05 are Doctorates, two staff members pursuing Ph.D. About 60 research articles are published in well repute high impact factor national and international journals. The staff members of our department attend national & international workshops in the field of chemistry and present their research papers. Most of Our staff members have guided M. Phil degrees and completed minor research projects with the financial support of UGC New Delhi and SPiCE Projects with the financial assistance of VGST Bangalore.

The Department of Chemistry has well equipped laboratories with required chemicals for conducting regular practical classes as well as research activities. These labs are also equipped with instruments like conductivity meters, pH meters, Potentiometers, Colorimeter, Distilled water Units, Centrifuge machines, Digital balances etc. Well established library with text books, periodicals and books related to competitive exams.

Future Plans

Upgrading the department with well equipped research laboratory.
Encourage students to appear IIT-JAM and KVPY exams by providing external coaching.
Enhance the number of reference books in the departmental Library.
To organize Guest lectures, seminars.
Conduct workshop on use of Chemistry related software’s like CHEM DRAW, CHEM SKETCH etc.
Conduct workshop on Green Chemistry Laboratory Techniques.
To establish a Analytical laboratory centre.
Popularizing Chemistry through community interactions.
To start M.Phil/ Ph.D. Programmes by taking Guide ship recognition from Karnatak University, Dharwad.
