Scope of the subject after Graduation

Botanists are required by varied organizations ranging from research organizations, educational institutes to hospitality and tourism bodies, depending upon the nature of their activities. The amount of diversity in the field of Botany gives its students to choose their specializations as per their choice, aptitude and interests.

The number of professions botanists can go into nowadays is endless. The knowledge of plant sciences is essential for development and management of forests, agriculture, parks, waste lands, sea wealth etc.

There is huge scope of being a part of this industry merely keeping in mind the amount of diversity it has to offer. One can be a part of any reputed organization as a Plant explorer, Conservationist, Ecologist, Environment consultant, Horticulturist, Plant biochemist, Molecular biologist, plant pathologist and plant breeder.

Facilities

• The department is having two laboratories of size 600 sq. ft. each.
• It has a HOD chamber, two staff rooms, one preparation room, one store room, two class rooms.
• Research laboratory was established from the funding received by the VGST and UGC
• The Department is equipped with sufficient number of dissection and compound microscopes, Binocular Microscope, Stereo microscopes, OHP, LCD and smart board.
• The department library has good number of books, e-books and CDs on the subject.

Botanical Garden

The Department has a Botanical Garden with good number of rare plants such as Saraca asoca (a RET species), Pimenta officinalis(Allspice), Syagrus romanzofiana (miniature coconut), Erinocarpus nimmonii Grah. (a RET species), Rhynchostylis retusa (a RET orchid), Adansonia digitata L.(Baobab tree), a very rare tree species. The campus hosts more than 600 species of plants of which 125 species are trees. There are totally 2400 trees in the campus (Tree count done by students).

Green house

The department has a green house with shade loving plants, ferns and orchids. Gardeners maintain the garden. Propagation work is also undertaken by the gardeners.

Bonsai plants

50 Bonsai plants of more than 20-25 years age are maintained by the department. The students are given training ,how to grow Bonsai.

Herbarium and Museum

1000 Herbarium sheets belonging to 150 angiosperm families are maintained in the Department herbarium. Herbaria of RET species, Endemic species, Medicinal plants, new reports are maintained separately. The herbarium is also digitalized. The department has a built-in museum with more than 200 museum specimens. Rare specimens like twins, freaks are maintained in the museum. Museum is also digitalized.

Medicinal plant Garden

A medicinal plant garden, “Madhuparnika” has more than 50 medicinal plants. Some of them include Tinospora cordifolia (Amruth Balli), Gymnema sylvestre (Madhunashini), Sauropus androgyanus (L) Merr.(Multivitamin plant), Gloriosa superba L. (a RET species), Hemidesmus indicus(Indian Sarasaparilla), Abrus precatorius(Crab’s eye), Alpinia calcarata, Costus igneus(Insulin plant), Costus speciosus, etc.
