Overview

Post graduate department of Physics affiliated to Karnatak University was established in the academic year 2014-15 with the broad vision of providing higher education to the aspiring student community with present intake of 60 students. The department has academic standards with well-equipped laboratory, computer laboratory with internet facility, department library and student favorable student-teacher ratio which offers individualattention to each student. All members of the department are committed to the academic excellence, creativity and overall development of students.

Course Details:

M. Sc. Physics is two-year course spread over 4 semesters each of 16 weeks duration as per UGC norms. In this course 3 categories of papers offered are general, specialization and elective. Two elective papers are offered one each in 2nd and 3rd semester. In semester I and II all students are offered compulsory general papers. In third and fourth semester two general papers (compulsory for all) and two specialization papers (students can choose any one of the specializations-Condensed Matter Physics and Nuclear& Particle Physics) are offered.
In each semester there will be FOUR theory papers and TWO practical papers. Each theory paper is of FOUR hours of lectures per week.
Each practical paper is of minimum FOUR contact hours per week. These include seminars, tutorials and discussion classes. Internal Assessment (IA) shall be conducted during the semesters. Each theory and practical papers shall carry 100 marks, out of which 25 marks are for internal assessment (IA). The various components of IA for 25 marks are as follows: Attendance-3 marks, written test(s), seminars and assignments (minimum two)-22 marks. Total maximum marks are 600 per I-semester, II-semester and III-semester and 650 marks in IV-Semester. Project: Every student has to compulsorily take a Project course in the IV-semester. The Project may be a theoretical or an experimental work in the respective specialization subject. More than one student may be required to work on an assigned project. Project course carries 150 marks, of which 25 is for IA, 50 marks for viva-voce examination with presentation of the work and 75 marks for the evaluation of dissertation, at the semester-end examination.
Four batches of the students have passed out with M. Sc. in Physics from our college. Out of these three have joined the research programmes-one at IIT Chennai and two are at Karnatak University, Dharwad. Two have cleared GATE, four have cleared K-SET and one CSIR-NET with JRF.
