Overview
As English has been one of the basics subjects the department of English was also started in 1944 only. The department has a glorious history. The first Principal of J.S.S college Shri B.M. Shrikantayya,Kannada Kanva , POET'S POET happened tp be the first H.O.D of English also.
B.M Shree, whose "English Geetegalu", a collection of poems in Kannada, translated from English ,ushersed in a new era, new movement in Kannada literature i.e "Navodaya Movement".
After B.M Shree, the doyen of Kannada literature, a noted writer in Maratrhi Shri G.A Kulkarni , upon whom Central Sahitya Academy Award was conferred ,took the responsibility of the department . G.A(he has been popularly known as "G.A" among the readers of Marathi literature has been remembered all over Maharashtra for his rich , memorable and valuable contributions to the Marathi function even today .He is still worshipped as an ideal teacher (Guru)in the true sense of the term by his past students , They still admire him for his punctuality, sincerity, intergrity and hard-working nature.
The next H.O.D of English was Prof.R.K Koppar,who served as senate member of K.U.Dharwad for more than two decades. He was a popular teacher and well-known speaker
Next prof P.T.J Mathachan assumed the headship .He contributed much towards he discipline as he also served as N,C.C officer
Prof (Smt) Malati Pattanshetty ,a well known poetess and short story writer in Kannada took the charger of the department after the retirementof Prof.P.T.J Matachan She has published a few collections of poems and short stories in Kannada for which she has honoured with different awards including Kannada Sahitya Academy Award . She served as a member of Kannada Sahitya Academy for one term.
