DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY


Overview

Zoology is one of the fascinating subject of Life Sciences. The department of Biology was established in the year 1949. It was the biggest department consisting of both Botany and Zoology sections provided with elaborate museums. In the view of popularity of institution and students’ strength the department later considered as two separate disciplines Botany and Zoology in 1970. A new building ‘Shri Manjunatheshwara Vignana Mandir’ (3600 sqft) was constructed in the year 1982 with the blessing of Lord Manjunatha Swamy, Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala. His Holiness Shri. Vishwaprasannathirtha Swamiji of Pejavarmath Udupi is the President of Janata Shiskshana Samiti, Dharwad. Poojya Padma Vibhushan Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade Dharmadhikari of Srikshetra Dharmasthala is the Chairman. Prof. N. Vajrakumar is the Secretary of JSS, Dharwad. Finance officer Dr. Ajitprasad. Development officer Dr. Suraj Jain.


Presently the department has spacious building with two lecture halls, two laboratories, Library, Research lab, and staff rooms and the department has well maintained museum. Previously Department was chaired by Dr. B.R.Deshpande (1966-1999), Dr. D.V.Sanjeev Rao (1999-2001), Prof. S.S. Kurabar (2001-2003), Dr. G. Krishnamurthy (2003-2015), Dr. S.V. Kallapur (2015-2018) and presently by Dr. Smt. Y. Jayamma, with well qualified and experienced faculty Smt. G.V. Chavannavar, Sri. R. M. Pattar, Sri. G. P. Manjunath, and Dr. Kartheek R. M.


The department conducts student seminars to help them with subject matter articulation to a wider public which is an essential part of students growth. Students are encouraged to take up projects. Guest lectures and extension activities are arranged. “Learn together” program lays special emphasis on helping students enrich their vocabulary and provide knowledge and opportunity to discuss recent trends and discoveries in Biological Sciences by display of profound articles from news papers and Journals on the departmental notice board. There is special provision for slow learners with remedial classes. Books, question banks are provided are available to all students. Students are also guided by faculty for career orientation and by encouraging them to attend conferences. Regular field trips and study tours are conducted for students every year which includes visiting different geographical sites, institutions and industries relevant to field of study. This is to enable students with a chance to learn about a topic or a theme from a different and wider perspective.
