DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS (UG)

Overview

Physics is a broad scientific discipline ranging from the science of cosmology to the hands-on manipulation of matter at the atomic scale. There is a common theme running throughout the eclectic range of problems studied by the physics community, which may be summarized as a systematic and quantitative curiosity into why things are the way they are.

‘Physics is concerned with the observation, understanding and prediction of natural phenomena and the behavior of man-made systems. It deals with profound questions about the nature of the universe and with some of the most important practical, environmental and technological issues of our time. Its scope is broad and involves mathematics and theory, experiment and observations, computing, technology, materials and information theory. Ideas and techniques from physics also drive developments in related disciplines, including chemistry, computing, engineering, materials science, mathematics, medicine and the life sciences, meteorology and statistics.’

With this great revelation, the department of Physics was established in the year 1949, with an objective of imparting quality Science education to the rural and urban students. The department, since then offering quality education to the poor, under privileged without gender disparity. Prof. N. V. Gejji was the first Head of the Department of Physics, followed by Prof. H.M. Pujar, Prof. P. R. Hanchinmani, Late Dr. H. A. Jahagirdhar, Late Sri. S.M. Patil, Prof. P.N. Yeri. and Dr. K.H. Nagachandra. Since 2007, Dr. (Smt.) B.R. Gayathri is the Head of the Department.

As of now, the department has great legacy. Many of the Alumni of the department have studied and subsequently became faculty in various premier institutes in the country and abroad. At present, some of them are pursuing Ph.D. in IIT Madras, IISc, Bangalore, Mysore, Gulbarga, Mangalore and in various State Universities including Karnatak University. The alumni are working in government positions, IBM, HP and Infosys and many multi-national companies. The placement activity in the college is successful, and many students are getting placement opportunities in Infosys, Wipro, Concentrix etc. Alumni Association is active and many of them visit the department every year to refresh their fond memories of learning in the department and the college.

Postgraduate course M.Sc. in Physics was introduced in the year 2014-2015 with an intake capacity of 40 students, and now the intake capacity is 60. Condensed Matter Physics and Nuclear Physics offered as specialization in the final year.
